Sixteen-year-old Korben White turned heads and lit up the internet with his bold prom look: a voluminous red ballgown paired with a glittering tuxedo top. With his vibrant red hair perfectly complementing his outfit, Korben made an unforgettable entrance at Archbishop Sancroft High School’s prom.
His proud mother, Nina Green, couldn’t resist sharing the moment on social media. Her post quickly went viral, drawing both admiration and criticism. Some praised Korben for his bravery and sense of style, calling him “stunning,” while others accused Nina of failing to guide her son properly.
But this wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment decision. Korben’s dream of attending prom in a gown began when he was just 12. Over the next four years, his vision evolved into reality, and he even developed his drag persona, Miss Frou Frou, along the way.
Speaking to the BBC, Nina shared the inspiration behind Korben’s outfit. “He wanted to attend as his authentic self, blending masculine and feminine elements, much like Billy Porter. It was all about being Korben… in a dress,” she said.
When the big night arrived, Korben stepped out of the car wearing his stunning red ensemble—a crisp white shirt, a striking bow, and that show-stopping skirt. The crowd erupted in applause. Teachers, classmates, and parents cheered him on, creating a heartwarming scene.
“I couldn’t stop crying,” Nina admitted. “Even some of the staff were emotional. It was pure joy seeing him so supported and celebrated.”
On July 1, Nina shared a tweet reflecting on the journey: “At 12, my son told me he wanted to go to prom in a gown. Four years later, we made it happen. I’m so proud of him, and the love he received from his school was overwhelming.” The post, accompanied by dazzling photos of Korben, quickly captured hearts worldwide.
Among the many responses was a comment from Michelle Visage, a judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race. “You’re an incredible mother, and your child is a star,” she wrote. Korben was thrilled. “She’s such an icon. I can’t believe she noticed us!”
While Nina’s post inspired countless parents, it also sparked discussions about societal norms. One parent shared their struggle supporting a child with a similar dream, fearing peer rejection. Another recounted how their trans son couldn’t attend prom due to bullying. Yet, there were also dissenting voices, criticizing Nina for “encouraging non-conformity” and lamenting the state of society.
But Nina remains undeterred. She and Korben even joined London Pride to celebrate their journey and show solidarity with others. “Negativity won’t stop us,” she said. “I hope our story inspires parents to embrace their kids for who they are.”
Korben’s story is a testament to the power of authenticity and unconditional love. His courage to be himself—paired with his mother’s unwavering support—has sparked a broader conversation about acceptance, individuality, and the importance of creating spaces where everyone can shine.
