She Wanted to Be Taller—Now She Regrets the $165,000 Surgery That Made It Happen
Theresia Fischer, a 31-year-old model from Germany, made headlines for a decision that forever changed her life—and not entirely for the better. At just 24 years old, she underwent an extreme leg-lengthening surgery. Her motivation? A toxic relationship and the dream of adding a few extra inches to her height.
Standing at 5’6″, Theresia wasn’t short by most standards. But the procedure stretched her height to over six feet tall. It also stretched her physical and emotional limits in ways she never expected.
The surgery itself is not for the faint of heart—or for anyone afraid of pain. Surgeons inserted adjustable telescopic rods into her shins, deliberately breaking her shin bones and splitting her calf muscles to make space.
“The shin bone is broken cleanly, the calf muscles are split, and a telescopic rod is used in each case,” Theresia explained. She had to adjust the rods herself, turning them daily to extend her legs by a fraction of a millimeter. “Ten clicks a day on each side bring an additional 0.5 millimeters,” she said, adding that the process was grueling both physically and mentally.
The scars from the procedure were more than skin-deep. While Theresia has a massive social media following—over 142,000 followers on Instagram and 200,000 on TikTok—her online fame doesn’t erase the emotional and physical pain she endured.
Back in 2019, she spoke positively about the surgery, claiming it boosted her confidence after years of being bullied for her appearance. She even mentioned it improved her personal life, including her relationship dynamics. But as the years passed, the toll of the surgery became harder to ignore.
Theresia’s story is a cautionary tale about the lengths people go to for self-acceptance—and the unforeseen consequences that often come with such drastic measures. Her honesty has sparked conversations about body image, societal pressures, and the value of self-love.
Now, Theresia uses her platform to challenge societal beauty standards, urging others to embrace themselves as they are. Her journey, though filled with pain and regret, carries a powerful message: Confidence can’t be built on broken bones.
