17 Bears Taste Freedom After Years of Captivity—And It’s Beautiful

For years, 17 bears lived in misery, confined to barren concrete pits at the Black Forest Bear Park in Georgia. They begged visitors for scraps of food, unable to experience even the simplest joys of nature. Newborn cubs? They were taken away from their mothers almost immediately. It was a heartbreaking existence.

But now, everything has changed.

These lucky bears have been rescued and are living their best lives at the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keenesburg, Colorado. Thanks to a joint effort by PETA, the Atlanta Humane Society, and an animal lover named Sam Simpson, the bears now have 60 sprawling acres of freedom. Sixty acres! Imagine going from a concrete cage to rolling fields where you can roam, forage, and even snack on fresh fruits and veggies.

It’s not just freedom they’ve gained—it’s a whole new life.

After years of pacing on hard concrete, they now feel soft grass under their paws. They can dig into the earth, climb, explore, and simply be bears. For two of the bears, there’s even more joy ahead—they were pregnant at the time of their rescue. Now, for the first time, they’ll raise their cubs in a natural, open environment where family bonds can thrive.

The transformation is incredible.
