20 Years of Planting: How a Couple Saved Thousands of Animals

We’re on the brink of losing our forests because we’ve put everything else above the very thing we need to survive: oxygen. Deforestation and the killing of animals have become so normal that hearing about environmental disasters barely fazes us anymore.

But here’s the thing—while deforestation is rampant, not everyone accepts it as fate. Some fight back, and among those rare few are a remarkable Brazilian couple who turned devastation into hope.

Planting a Dream, One Tree at a Time

Sebastião and Lélia Salgado spent nearly two decades planting a forest, creating a sanctuary for hundreds of animals. Their journey began with a simple yet bold idea.

Sebastião, a journalist, returned home to Brazil after covering the harrowing aftermath of the Rwandan genocide. Hoping to find solace in the lush greenery of his homeland, he instead found heartbreak.

His once-thriving forest in Minas Gerais had become a barren wasteland. Rivers had dried up, the ground was dusty and lifeless, and less than 0.5% of the trees remained. Sebastião felt crushed.

A Spark of Hope

It was Lélia who reignited his hope. She suggested something radical: why not bring the forest back? With her unwavering belief, they decided to turn this dream into reality.

In 1998, they planted their first seed. But they knew it wasn’t a job for two people alone. The couple hired 24 workers to help them cover 1,754 acres. Together, they cleared weeds, planted seeds, and nurtured the fragile beginnings of a new forest.

Spreading the Word

Sebastião didn’t stop there. He took their mission online, inviting people from around the world to support their cause. They even founded an organization called Instituto Terra.

The goal? To restore the ecosystem and produce Atlantic Forest seedlings. But the impact didn’t stop at planting trees. Instituto Terra became an educational hub, teaching schoolchildren, farmers, and officials about reforestation and sustainable practices.

A Forest Reborn

Their dedication paid off. Over time, tiny seeds grew into towering trees, transforming the desolate land into a thriving tropical forest. Since 1998, the couple has planted over 4 million saplings, representing 293 tree species, across 1,502 acres.

This green revival didn’t just change the landscape—it also restored the climate. Rainfall stabilized, and the ecosystem began to heal.

A Home for Wildlife

Perhaps the most heartwarming result was the return of wildlife. Birds, mammals, amphibians, and reptiles—some endangered—found refuge in the new forest. Today, around 172 bird species and countless other animals call this lush haven home.

One Step Can Change the World

It’s incredible how one small step can create a ripple of change. Thanks to Sebastião, Lélia, and their dedicated team, a lifeless desert became a thriving forest once again.

Let’s take a moment to applaud their extraordinary effort—and remind ourselves that even in the face of disaster, hope can still take root.
