Kameroun Mares was battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia when she found comfort in the company of a playful puppy. In 2013, she brought home a Husky and named him Semper Fidelis, which means “Always faithful” in Latin. Little did she know, this faithful companion would soon be taken from her in a way she never expected.
In 2016, Kameroun had to travel from Florida to California, leaving Semper in the care of her roommate. It was supposed to be a short trip, but then she got a message that would change everything: Semper was missing. The news hit hard. She immediately began searching, reaching out to shelters, posting online, and even calling rescues. With Semper’s microchip, she was hopeful that someone would find him and bring him home.
But weeks turned into months, and the search continued—even after she moved to California. Kameroun’s desperation grew, and that’s when she turned to Ana Campos, a private investigator, for help. What Campos uncovered next would leave Kameroun shocked.
It turns out, Semper’s microchip had been tampered with. When Kameroun checked the AKC Reunite database in 2017, she discovered that someone had added their name to Semper’s chip. After digging deeper, Campos learned that the other microchip company hadn’t bothered to check whether Semper already had an owner registered. Worse, someone had posted Semper on Craigslist for $200!
The heartbreaking truth came to light: Kameroun’s own roommate had sold Semper. Kameroun was devastated. The betrayal was beyond words.
After a long legal battle, a judge ruled in Kameroun’s favor, and Semper was finally returned to her—2.5 years after he had gone missing. When she saw him again, it was like no time had passed. He still remembered all the commands she had taught him. The reunion was more than just a moment of joy; it was a reminder of the love and bond they had shared all along.
