Darius Sasnauskas, a Lithuanian living near Yellowstone National Park in the U.S., has always loved wildlife. One day, his backyard became the stage for something magical—a deer gave birth to three tiny fawns right before his eyes. For Darius, it felt like witnessing a scene straight out of a nature documentary.
But joy quickly turned to concern. One of the newborn fawns was injured and couldn’t keep up with its family. Helpless and alone, she was left behind, her future looking bleak. But Darius couldn’t just stand by and do nothing.
Although he’s firmly against keeping wild animals as pets, he knew the little fawn wouldn’t survive on her own. So, he made a decision—he’d foster her until she could return to the wild.
The rescue mission began immediately. Darius brought the fawn into his home and tended to her injured leg. He did his research, learning how to feed her properly and care for her around the clock. Every three to four hours, he hand-fed her milk, even mimicking a mother deer’s behavior by gently licking her face to comfort her.
Slowly but surely, the little deer began to heal. She grew stronger each day and found herself at home among Darius’s other pets—a dog and a cat, who quickly became her unlikely friends. With their companionship and Darius’s care, the fawn made a full recovery.
When the time came to release her back into the wild, Darius hoped she would reunite with her family and thrive. But something unexpected happened—the fawn kept coming back. The bond between them was too strong for her to leave behind.
Darius worried she had grown too attached, fearing it might make life in the wild more difficult for her. But one day, something incredible happened: the fawn reunited with her family.
