Eyewitness John Proven described the aftermath as harrowing, calling it a “major accident.” Flames engulfed one vehicle, while the front of the truck was crushed beyond recognition. The bus, carrying seniors from Dauphin to Sand Hills Casino, was left mangled in the tragic crash.

Emergency responders, including 12 ambulances and an air ambulance, arrived swiftly. Despite their efforts, the scene left first responders and locals shaken.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation. RCMP Superintendent Rob Lasson noted that footage suggests the truck had the right of way, but stressed that no conclusions have been drawn yet.

The tragedy has drawn comparisons to the 2018 Humboldt Broncos bus accident in Saskatchewan, which claimed 16 lives. Manitoba officials have sought help from experts involved in that investigation, hoping to bring clarity to the heartbreaking events in Carberry.

William Doherty, CEO of the trucking company involved, expressed deep sorrow. “Our hearts go out to the families and friends of those who lost their lives,” he shared. “We’re fully cooperating with the investigation and remain committed to supporting everyone affected by this tragedy.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also spoke out, offering condolences. “This news from Carberry is incredibly tragic,” he said. “My heart goes out to those grieving, and my thoughts are with the injured. Canadians stand with you during this painful time.”

For Dauphin, the loss is deeply personal. Many victims were well-known within the tight-knit community. Mayor David Bosiak described the emotional toll, saying, “This is a punch in the gut for our town. Everyone knew someone on that bus.”

As families mourn and officials work to uncover the cause, the heartbreak ripples far beyond Manitoba. This tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of community in the face of unthinkable loss.
