Flying is stressful enough without unexpected surprises. But for Danielle Schwab and her fiancé Mikey, their recent flight turned into a frustrating ordeal that’s now sparking debates online.
The couple had booked first-class seats on a United Airlines flight from London to Chicago, expecting a comfortable trip. Instead, midway through the journey, Mikey was asked to move to coach—so a cabin crew member could take his seat.

Danielle shared the story on TikTok, and her disbelief was palpable. “We booked these seats, we’re in first class,” she explained. “All of a sudden, my fiancé got moved to coach.”
She acknowledged the hard work of flight staff but felt the decision was unfair. “I get it—the crew works really hard. But we paid for these seats. This isn’t customer service,” she said.
As the story unfolded, Danielle revealed that Mikey wasn’t randomly selected. He was chosen from a “list” and offered either a refund of the price difference or a first-class seat on a different flight. While United Airlines provided financial compensation—including a $1,500 travel voucher—many on TikTok felt it wasn’t enough.

“Sounds like a problem for the airline, not the customer that paid for the seat,” one commenter said. Another added, “They paid for a first-class experience after getting engaged. This isn’t right.”
United Airlines later issued a statement, explaining that the usual crew rest seats weren’t available. “We had to reassign two customers to Premium Plus to avoid canceling the flight,” they said.
Although one flight attendant apologized and tried to make Mikey’s journey as comfortable as possible, the incident left a sour taste. For Danielle and Mikey, it was supposed to be a special trip. Instead, it turned into an example of how even premium travel isn’t always smooth sailing.
