Customer Changes Mind About $100 Tip—Server Loses Job. What’s Your Take?

A server’s TikTok video is making waves online after she shared a story about being fired for accepting a $100 tip. The incident has left people divided, with many questioning who’s really at fault. Here’s what went down.

Mar, the server at the center of the drama, posted a video explaining how her job unraveled. “I got fired today, and I’m going to tell you why,” she began. “I didn’t do anything wrong, and that’s the crazy part.”

According to Mar, a customer had left her a generous $100 tip. At her restaurant, there’s a policy requiring servers to notify management about tips exceeding 40% of the bill so they can be logged properly. Mar says she followed the rule to the letter, handing the receipt over to her manager to process.

The total, including the tip, matched the grand total signed by the customer—at least, that’s what Mar thought. Things took a turn when the customer called the restaurant, disputing the tip and accusing Mar of forging his signature.

Mar was called into a meeting with the general manager. She explained that she hadn’t altered anything and that her immediate manager had approved the tip. But the restaurant sided with the customer and terminated her employment.

“Even though I’ve never been written up, even though I’m a good employee, they sided with the guest,” Mar said, visibly frustrated. “They were even about to promote me to trainer.”

She offered to return the tip to smooth things over, but the restaurant insisted it was “too much trouble.” They claimed the company had already reimbursed the customer $80 and blamed her for the situation.

In the comments section of her TikTok, opinions flew like hotcakes on a Sunday morning.

One commenter accused Mar of tampering with the tip: “Nah, you wrote that in. He left you $2, not $100.” Another echoed the sentiment, pointing out the handwriting looked suspicious.

Others came to Mar’s defense. “This is why ‘the customer is always right’ is such a bad policy,” one user wrote. Another urged her to take legal action, suggesting she might have grounds for a wrongful termination lawsuit.

Mar’s story has struck a nerve, leaving people wondering: Was the receipt really altered, or is this another case of a business unfairly siding with a customer?
