What would you do if you found yourself lost at sea with nothing but the rain and raw fish to keep you alive? For Tim Shaddock, a 51-year-old Australian cancer survivor, and his loyal dog, Bella, this became their reality for two harrowing months.
Tim and Bella set sail from La Paz, Mexico, in April, aiming for French Polynesia on their catamaran. But a month into their dream voyage, a fierce storm wrecked their plans—and their boat. Stranded in the middle of the vast Pacific Ocean, they embarked on a battle for survival that feels straight out of a Hollywood movie.

With their boat damaged, Tim relied on rainwater to stay hydrated and caught raw fish to sustain both himself and Bella. Two months later, a tuna trawler’s surveillance helicopter spotted their battered catamaran bobbing in the endless blue, rescuing them just in time.
When Tim stepped off the vessel, his transformation was striking. Emaciated and sporting an overgrown beard, he resembled Tom Hanks’ character from Cast Away—though instead of a volleyball named Wilson, he had Bella by his side.
“I’ve been through a very difficult ordeal,” Tim told 9News. “I just need rest and good food. Otherwise, I’m in very good health.” He even flashed a blood pressure test showing he was in remarkable condition for someone who had been alone at sea for so long.
A Combination of Luck, Skill, and Resilience
Experts credit Tim’s survival to a mix of preparation, knowledge, and sheer determination. Ocean survival specialist Mike Tipton explained that Tim knew to stay out of the sun during the hottest hours to conserve energy and prevent dehydration. “The chances of being found in the Pacific are slim,” he added, describing the rescue as a “needle in a haystack” moment.
The location’s climate also played a role. Warmer weather made the ordeal survivable compared to freezing waters, and the regular rain provided precious fresh water.
Bella, Tim’s constant companion, may have been the unsung hero of this story. “Having someone—or in this case, a dog—to keep your spirits up is vital in situations like this,” Tipton said. “The mental battle is just as important as the physical one.”
A Life of Challenges and Courage
Before setting out on this journey, Tim had already faced and conquered immense challenges. Two decades ago, he battled bowel cancer and credited a raw food diet and fasting with helping him overcome the disease. This survival instinct and mindset likely carried him through his Pacific ordeal.
Tim’s friends shared that he retired from IT to seek new adventures, but after this experience, they’re hoping he opts for something a little less daring.
Whether he returns to the ocean or chooses a quieter path, one thing is certain—Tim and Bella’s story is a testament to resilience, hope, and the unbreakable bond between man and dog.
