Last month, our beloved dog Abbey, who was 14 years old, passed away. The day after Abbey’s death, my four-year-old daughter, Meredith, was crying and telling me how much she missed her furry friend.

She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey reached heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that was a wonderful idea. So, Meredith put together these words in her letter:

Dear God,

Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is now with you in heaven. I miss her so much. I’m happy that you let me have her, even though she got sick.

I hope you will play with her. She loves swimming and playing with balls. I’m sending a picture of her so you’ll know she’s my dog. I really miss her.

Love, Meredith

We placed the letter in an envelope along with a photo of Abbey and Meredith. We addressed it to God/Heaven and put our return address on it. Meredith then covered the envelope with several stickers, saying it would take a lot to get the letter all the way to heaven.

That afternoon, we dropped the letter in the mailbox at our post office in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. A few days later, Meredith asked if God had received her letter. I told her that I believed He had.

Yesterday, something incredible happened. A package wrapped in gold paper appeared on our porch, addressed to “Meredith” in handwriting we didn’t recognize. Meredith eagerly opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called When a Pet Dies. Attached to the inside cover was the very letter we had sent to God, still in its open envelope. On the opposite page was the photo of Abbey and Meredith, along with this note:

Dear Meredith,

Abbey arrived in heaven safely. The photo was a big help—I recognized her right away.

Abbey is no longer sick. Her spirit is here with me, just like she is in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don’t need our bodies in heaven, I don’t have pockets to keep your photo, so I’m sending it back to you in this little book. Keep it as a reminder of Abbey.

Thank you for your beautiful letter, and thank your mother for helping you write and send it to me. You have a wonderful mother—I chose her especially for you. I send you my blessings every day and want you to know I love you very much. By the way, I’m easy to find. I’m everywhere love is.

God of Love

Georgea ended her post with this: “I want everyone to know that this wonderful story is 100% true.” (Please, don’t be offended by the reference to God—it’s part of the story.)
