Nature never stops surprising us. No matter where we look, there’s always something incredible in the natural world. Yet, while many of us turn to nature for comfort, we often neglect to protect the environment that provides it.
We usually focus on animals and landscapes, overlooking the beauty of flowers. Among the many flowers we encounter daily, some are truly exceptional. Orchids are a prime example.
There are over 30,000 species of orchids worldwide. Some are common, but others are rarely seen. The Monkey Orchid, also known as Dracula Simia, is one of these rare beauties. True to its name, this flower has a unique appearance.
The Monkey Orchid grows in the forests of Peru and southeastern Ecuador. To spot one, you’ll need to hike deep into the forest, about 2,000 feet above sea level.
Flower specialist Carlyle A. Lauren discovered and named this orchid in 1978. He noted that its petals resemble a monkey’s face and that the flower has a surprising citrus scent, reminiscent of fresh oranges.
This orchid doesn’t bloom on a set schedule. Sometimes, flowers bloom one after another. You can find 118 different types of this orchid species in Mexico, Colombia, Central America, Peru, and especially Ecuador.
If you want to grow a Monkey Orchid at home, it’s not easy. They require specific conditions, including 100% humidity, cooler temperatures, and low light.
These remarkable plants grow about 2 feet tall. If you’re keen on planting them at home, use sphagnum moss. However, if you’re new to gardening, it might be best to start with easier orchids before attempting the Monkey Orchid.
