In today’s world of food delivery apps, tipping is a never-ending debate. But one DoorDash driver took things to a whole new level—by refusing to hand over a customer’s order because she thought an $8 tip wasn’t enough!
The entire ordeal was caught on the customer’s Ring doorbell camera and quickly went viral, sparking heated discussions on social media. The clip, uploaded to YouTube, has racked up over a million views, leaving people divided over who was in the wrong.
“You Need to Adjust Your Tip”
In the footage, the driver, clearly upset, refuses to leave the food at the customer’s doorstep. Instead, she confronts him, saying, “Uh, no—I can speak to you, actually.”
The issue? She had just driven 12.5 miles from Commack to Smithtown, Long Island, a trip she claims took 40 minutes. She insisted that an $8 tip wasn’t enough for her trouble.
“I think you need to adjust your tip to make it right,” she told the customer.
The customer wasn’t having it. He argued the drive should have only taken 15 to 20 minutes—not 40. That’s when the driver made her final move: “I’m gonna bring the food back! I’m gonna bring the food back!” she declared, before walking off with the order.
Who’s Really in the Wrong?
Social media exploded with reactions, and most people took the customer’s side.

“This woman has clearly never worked for tips before. Eight dollars is a home run!” one commenter wrote.
Another person pointed out the irony of the situation:
“She refused to give the guy his food, and all she accomplished was reducing her tip from $8 to zero. And guess what? The guy probably got a full refund and extra credits for the hassle. He won, she lost.”
Even a former DoorDash driver chimed in, explaining that drivers always see the tip before accepting a job and can decide whether it’s worth their time.
“Honestly? An $8 tip is generous in most cases,” they added.
DoorDash Responds
As the video made rounds online, DoorDash stepped in, issuing a statement emphasizing their zero-tolerance policy for inappropriate behavior.
They confirmed that the driver had been removed from the platform, stating:
“We take the safety of our community extremely seriously, and such behavior is never tolerated on the DoorDash platform. Any violations of our policies are grounds for deactivation.”
They also reassured customers that they had been in touch with the affected customer and regretted that the experience fell short of expectations.
The Bigger Debate
This viral incident brings up a larger issue: How much should customers tip?
Delivery drivers rely on tips to make a living, often spending significant time on each order. But at what point does tipping culture go too far? Should customers feel pressured to tip beyond what they think is fair?
As gig work continues to grow, these tipping battles aren’t going anywhere. But one thing’s for sure—next time you order delivery, you might want to double-check your tip before hitting “Place Order.”
