In a moment that will be remembered for years, 18-year-old Emma Wright took center stage at East Forsyth High School’s homecoming ceremony in Kernersville, North Carolina. But this wasn’t just any crowning moment—it was a celebration of love, acceptance, and pure, unfiltered joy.
As she stood on the football field with other hopeful candidates, the air was thick with anticipation. Then, the announcement came. “Emma Wright!”
For a split second, she was stunned. Then, the emotions hit—hard. Tears welled up in her eyes as the crowd erupted in cheers. “So amazing,” she managed to say through happy sobs. “I started crying as soon as they read out my name.”
Emma’s father, standing proudly by her side, was just as overwhelmed. “We had no idea,” he told WXII12. “It’s something you hope for, but when it actually happens… we’re just so grateful to be part of this amazing school and to see Emma being celebrated like this.”
But this moment was about more than just a crown. Emma’s victory was a powerful symbol of inclusivity. East Forsyth High School’s principal, Rusty Hall, couldn’t have been prouder. “Emma is our dancer,” he said, smiling. “You see her dancing in the cafeteria, in the hallways—she’s loved by everyone.”
He also emphasized the school’s commitment to making sure every student feels valued. “Here, everybody is included. Everybody’s voice matters. Once you’re here, you’re family. And tonight was proof of that.”

Even more fitting? Emma’s crowning took place in October—Down Syndrome Awareness Month—making her win even more meaningful.
But if you think this is the peak of Emma’s story, think again. She’s a cheerleader with big dreams. Next year, she plans to attend Western Carolina University in Cullowhee. And after that? She hopes to open her own bakery and ice cream shop.
Emma’s journey is a reminder that joy, kindness, and inclusion can create the most beautiful moments. In a world that often highlights differences, she showed us the power of unity. East Forsyth High School didn’t just crown a queen that night—they made history in the best way possible.
Wouldn’t it be amazing if more schools followed their lead? 💙✨
