Love stories don’t always follow the rules, and for Matilda and Samuli, breaking the mold was just the beginning.
The Finnish couple’s relationship has raised eyebrows, sparked heated debates, and even invited online hate. Why? Because before they were husband and wife, they were step-siblings.
Matilda, 24, and Samuli, 28, share no blood relation, but their story isn’t your typical romance. They grew up as step-siblings after their parents, Tinja and Juha, fell in love and blended their families. At first, Matilda didn’t think much of Samuli—if anything, she found him annoying.
But that all changed one night in 2021.
What started as an unexpected moment—one Matilda initially called an “accident”—led to an undeniable realization: they had feelings for each other.
“It felt weird, and I wasn’t expecting it,” Matilda admitted. Samuli agreed, adding, “It was weird, wrong… and fun.”
Despite the initial confusion, their bond only deepened. But falling in love was one thing—facing the world’s judgment was another.
Love Against the Odds
When they went public with their relationship, the internet had a lot to say. Trolls flooded their social media with cruel comments, calling them “disgusting” and saying they needed “therapy.”
But Matilda and Samuli didn’t let the negativity shake them. Instead, their love grew even stronger.
By October 2021, they were engaged. Nine months later, in July 2022, they stood before family and friends near Helsinki and said, “I do.”

For Matilda, there was even a lighthearted twist—marrying Samuli meant she now shared a last name with her mother.
Family Reactions and a New Perspective on Love
If their relationship shocked the internet, their parents had a different reaction.
Tinja, Matilda’s mother, admitted that while it wasn’t entirely unexpected, she saw their happiness and chose to support them.
Matilda believes their love challenges outdated ideas about family and relationships. “If we were siblings by blood, then it would definitely be a taboo. But I don’t think our situation is, or should be,” she said.
From Step-Siblings to Soulmates
Their love story officially began at a birthday party in 2018, but it took years for anything romantic to develop. Until 2021, their bond was purely platonic. Then came a pivotal moment—a kiss.
That single kiss changed everything.
Suddenly, their close friendship felt like something more. But they were terrified. What if their feelings ruined everything?
For a week, they wrestled with doubt, but in the end, love won. They took the leap, moved in together, and never looked back.
Their story may not fit the traditional mold, but it’s proof that love doesn’t play by the rules.
