Splitting the Bill on a First Date—Is This Man Right or Just Cheap?

Dating in the modern world is already confusing, but one man’s first-date decision has taken the debate to a whole new level.

A TikTok user, @thewaterboy, recently shared a viral video of his date-night dilemma, racking up over four million views and countless opinions. His crime? Asking his Tinder date to split the bill—because he didn’t eat the appetizer she ordered.

In the video, the man films their restaurant check as he places his credit card inside. His date, clearly hesitant, slowly adds her own card to the folder. When she questions why they’re splitting the bill, he responds, “Because it’s a first date, maybe we should split it.”

@thewaterboy

I dont even know her and she wanted to split the bill??? After SHE ordered an appetizer that i didnt want!! THIS is what its like dating in MIAMI smh. I gotta move somewhere else, these girls are ENTITLED.

The situation escalates later in the car when the woman, still annoyed, says, “I can’t believe you made us split the bill.”

His defense? He didn’t eat the appetizer. Her counter? “You asked me out.” The conversation ends with a sharp “bye” and a door slam—an exit as dramatic as the online reactions.

The Internet Weighs In

The TikTok caption only added fuel to the fire. Frustrated, the man wrote:

But if he was hoping for sympathy, he didn’t get much.

Many commenters sided with the woman, saying that whoever initiates the date should pay.

  • “I’m with her. You asked for the date… you pay.”
  • “If the man asks me to split on the first date, I’m not arguing—that’ll just be the last date.”

Others suggested that he should have been upfront about his expectations.

  • “Coming from a dude, this is something you communicate beforehand. ‘Hey, it’s our first date—would you be okay splitting?’”

Then there were those who had a different perspective altogether.

  • “It’s not entitlement—it’s called being a gentleman. You asked her out. Why would she assume she had to pay?”

Who’s Right?

The video may have gone viral, but the debate rages on. Should the person who initiates a date always foot the bill? Or is splitting the check the new normal?

One thing’s for sure—this guy probably won’t be getting a second date.

What do you think? Would you split the bill, or do you agree with his date? Let us know in the comments!
