Flying can be stressful, but one passenger’s trip turned into an absolute nightmare when he found himself trapped in the last place anyone would want to be—an airplane bathroom.
A man aboard a SpiceJet flight from Mumbai to Bengaluru in January 2024 learned this the hard way. Shortly after takeoff on the one-hour-and-45-minute flight, he went to use the lavatory. But when he tried to leave, the door refused to budge.
The reason? A faulty door lock.
Crew members and even some passengers tried their best to free him, but nothing worked. That meant he had no choice but to stay put until the plane landed.
To make matters worse, the only thing the crew could do was slide a note under the door, reassuring him that they had “tried their best” and that help would arrive after landing.
The note, written by a flight attendant, read:
“Sir, we tried our best to open the door, however, we could not. Do not panic. We are landing in a few minutes, so please close the commode lid, sit on it, and secure yourself. As soon as the main door is open, an engineer will come.”

If that wasn’t bad enough, they added another reminder: “Do not panic.”
Thankfully, the plane landed at 3:42 AM, and engineers rushed on board to break open the door, finally freeing the passenger.
After the ordeal, SpiceJet released a statement, confirming that the lock malfunctioned while the aircraft was airborne. The airline assured that their crew “provided assistance and guidance” throughout the journey and that engineers resolved the issue upon landing.
To make up for the nightmare flight, SpiceJet refunded the passenger in full. Not exactly the ideal travel experience, but at least he won’t have to pay for it!
