A 5-Year-Old’s Dream to Be a Big Brother Sparks a Miraculous Journey

Some kids dream of flying like superheroes or hitting the winning home run in a big game. But for a little boy named Mikey, his dream was simpler—and much sweeter. Ever since he could talk, all he ever wanted was to be a big brother.

Mikey was the beloved engagement baby of Jessica Marotta and her husband, Mike. From the moment he learned to speak, he’d ask for one thing: a baby brother.

When Mikey turned three, his parents decided to try for another baby. Month after month, they hoped for good news, but nothing happened. As time passed, Mikey’s questions didn’t stop: “When will I get my baby brother?”

After a year of trying, Jessica and Mike turned to a fertility specialist. Jessica even underwent surgery to improve their chances. Finally, on Mikey’s fifth birthday, a pregnancy test showed a positive result. The family was overjoyed, but their happiness was short-lived.

Just one month later, Jessica suffered a heartbreaking miscarriage. The baby, they learned, had a fatal condition called trisomy 13. It was devastating. Worse still, the nurse confirmed the baby had been a boy—the baby brother Mikey had longed for.

Despite their grief, the family pressed on. They moved to a new home and donated all the baby items they had saved. Jessica and Mike decided they couldn’t go through such heartache again. They told Mikey he might never get a baby brother, even though it broke their hearts.

But life had a surprise waiting. On Mikey’s first day of kindergarten, Jessica wasn’t just emotional—she felt different. A pregnancy test confirmed the unthinkable: she was expecting again! Excitement mixed with fear as every doctor’s appointment brought cautious hope.

This time, the baby passed the critical tests, including one for trisomy 13. Mikey’s dream was coming true—it was another boy.

Still, the journey wasn’t easy. At 18 weeks, the baby wasn’t growing properly. Doctors suggested terminating the pregnancy, but Jessica and Mike refused to give up. Jessica was hospitalized for monitoring, and at just under 31 weeks, doctors decided to deliver the baby.

Baby Jake Eric was born weighing only 1 pound, 12 ounces. Tiny but mighty, he faced every challenge with incredible strength. The NICU became the family’s second home, and Mikey wasn’t allowed to hold his brother—something that made him deeply sad.

Then came a magical moment. On March 17, 2018, Mikey became the first sibling at Beth Israel NICU in Boston to do skin-to-skin contact with his baby brother. “It was amazing and emotional,” Jessica said. “It became the foundation of their bond.”

Jake spent 62 days in the NICU before coming home. Today, he and Mikey share an incredible connection. Every morning, they snuggle in bed, their love undeniable.

Jessica is convinced this was destiny. “Mikey and Jake were meant to be brothers,” she says. And after everything they’ve been through, it’s hard to argue with that.
