Leia the Hero Dog Saves a Baby Dolphin, and the Story Will Melt Your Heart
Some dogs are smart, but Leia the springer spaniel takes “good girl” to a whole new level. During a casual seaside walk, Leia’s quick thinking saved a helpless marine animal in desperate need.
It all started on the peaceful shores near Criccieth, Wales. Leia was out for a stroll with her owner, Rich Wilcock, a photography enthusiast. But their quiet day took an unexpected turn when Leia began barking uncontrollably. At first, Rich thought she was just being playful. But when she kept nudging and tugging at him, he realized something was up.
Curious, Rich followed his two-year-old pup, and what he saw left him stunned—a tiny marine creature stranded on the sand.
“At first, I thought it was a baby shark,” Rich shared later. “It was only about a foot and a half long. But then I noticed the blowhole on its head and realized it was a dolphin.”
Leia, clearly sensing the urgency, stayed by Rich’s side, her tail wagging with purpose. Without wasting a moment, Rich sprang into action. Carefully lifting the little one under its belly, he carried it to the waves and watched as it swam back to deeper waters.
But Rich didn’t stop there. He and Leia stayed on the beach for almost an hour to make sure the creature didn’t return to shore. “There was nobody around for miles, so I did what I could as gently as possible,” Rich explained.
While Rich initially believed it was a dolphin, marine experts later suggested it might have been a baby porpoise, a close cousin of dolphins that’s more related to narwhals and belugas. Whatever its species, one thing was clear: Leia’s sharp instincts saved a life that day.
And, of course, this heroic pup was rewarded with plenty of treats when they got home. “She’s incredibly smart—smarter than most dogs,” Rich said proudly.
