A poor man once asked Buddha, “Why am I so poor?”
Buddha replied, “You don’t give. You don’t know how to give.”
The poor man was confused. “But I have nothing to give,” he said.
Buddha smiled and said, “You have more to give than you think.”
“Your face: You can smile and bring joy to others.”
“Your mouth: You can speak kind words, lift others up, and comfort them.”
“Your heart: You can open it with sincerity and kindness.”
“Your eyes: You can look at others with compassion.”
“Your body: You can use your hands to help those in need.”
Buddha then said, “Look at all you have. You’re not poor at all.”
“The truly poor are those with empty hearts.”
