Sometimes, heroes show up in the most unexpected ways. That’s exactly what happened when a group of teenagers stumbled upon a newborn beluga whale stranded on the shores of the St. Lawrence River during their family vacation in Canada.
15-year-old Nicholas Milliard, along with his younger brothers, didn’t hesitate to jump into action. They knew the baby beluga needed help—and fast. To keep its delicate skin hydrated, they worked tirelessly, pouring water over it every five minutes. Thinking quickly, they even dug a small hole to collect water, creating a makeshift pool to keep the little whale from drying out.
But they didn’t stop there. The family from Quebec immediately called local rescuers, knowing that the fragile creature needed professional care. Until help arrived, the boys stayed by the beluga’s side, making sure it stayed comfortable and safe.
When the rescuers finally arrived, they carefully returned the baby beluga to the water, hopeful that it would find its mother—or that another beluga would step in to feed and care for it.
This heartwarming rescue is a reminder of just how vulnerable these beautiful creatures are. Once, thousands of beluga whales called the St. Lawrence River home. But pollution has taken a toll, and their numbers have dwindled dramatically over the years.
Thanks to the quick thinking and kindness of these boys, this little beluga now has a fighting chance. Let’s hope it grows up strong and becomes a symbol of hope for its species.
