Would you spend $200K on your kid’s wedding? One dad drew the line—and now his daughter and wife won’t even speak to him!
Taking to Reddit’s infamous AITA forum, the father shared his predicament: His daughter wants a lavish destination wedding in New Zealand, but he refused to foot the bill.
“My daughter is getting married, and she wishes to have a destination wedding,” he explained. “I told her no.”

The problem? The family lives in New York, and while New Zealand might be a dream wedding spot, the cost is sky-high. And when he put his foot down, his daughter and wife gave him the cold shoulder.
“My wife feels I should do it because we can afford it,” he added. “But I find it a pointless show of wealth.”
And the kicker? The bride-to-be isn’t asking for a little help—she wants her dad to cough up $200,000. And that doesn’t even include travel costs for guests!
Naturally, Reddit had some thoughts.
“NTA,” one user wrote. “If she can’t afford a destination wedding, she shouldn’t be having one. Not to mention—who’s paying for the guests? Flights, hotels… is that all on dad too?”
Another chimed in: “She’s throwing a tantrum because you won’t drop 200K? Sounds like she doesn’t deserve it.”

Some users wondered if the dad had previously agreed to fund the wedding. He clarified: “I agreed to pay for her wedding, but I didn’t expect her to want to get married in New Zealand.”
Worse yet, a destination wedding would mean most of their family can’t even attend—many don’t have passports or the means to travel that far.
So, what’s next? The dad says he’s now pricing out wedding venues in New York instead. But he’s laying down a tough choice for his wife and daughter: “It’s either a wedding or a house.”
Now, the internet is divided—should he just give in to keep the peace, or is he right to stand his ground?
