Elderly Couple Tried to Take His Seat—What Would You Have Done?

Flying long-haul is already tough—tiny legroom, cramped seats, and hours of discomfort. Now imagine this: You’ve paid extra for a bit more space, but someone asks you to give it up. What would you do?

One man shared his story on Reddit about a tense encounter during a 12-hour flight from New Zealand to Los Angeles. He revealed he had upgraded to premium economy for the extra legroom—a necessity since he’s 6’3″. But when he and his partner boarded the plane, they found their seats occupied by an elderly couple in their seventies.

At first, he assumed it was a mix-up. “I showed them my ticket and pointed to my name on the screen,” he wrote. But instead of moving, the couple suggested he take their seats—10 rows back, in a much tighter space.

The man refused. “I paid extra for these seats, and I need the legroom,” he explained. Even though he offered to help move their bags, the couple wasn’t thrilled. A flight attendant intervened and eventually escorted the pair to their correct seats.

While the situation seemed resolved, it didn’t end there. The elderly couple threw him annoyed glances, and other passengers gave him judgmental looks. “I got some stink eyes from people on the flight,” he said, adding, “but I stood my ground.”

The post quickly gained traction, with most Reddit users siding with the man. “Those were your seats. You paid for them. End of story,” one commenter said. Another added, “People like this couple think they can guilt others into giving up what’s rightfully theirs. Good for you for not giving in.”

Even a flight attendant chimed in, sharing a similar experience. “This happens more than you’d think. People often cave, but I’m glad you didn’t.”

The man’s story has sparked a heated debate: Should he have shown compassion and moved, or was he justified in keeping what he paid for?
