Fire rainbows occur when the sun is more than 58° above the horizon. They need high-altitude cirrus clouds that are thin and feathery. For this dazzling display to appear, the temperature has to be quite low, which is why these rainbows are made of ice crystals. When the sunlight hits these crystals just right, it bends and reflects like a prism, creating a rainbow-like effect.
Many people think fire rainbows are rare, but that’s not entirely true. Their appearance depends on where you are. In the United States, especially during the summer, fire rainbows are more common. However, spotting them in Middle and Northern Europe is much less frequent.
