Aurora Sky Castner’s life began in the unlikeliest of places—a prison cell. Born in the Galveston County Jail in Texas, Aurora didn’t have the start most people dream of. But 18 years later, she’s proving that where you start doesn’t define where you’ll go.
Last week, Aurora graduated near the top of her class at Conroe High School and received the ultimate reward for her hard work: acceptance into Harvard University.
Her journey is nothing short of extraordinary. In her Harvard application essay, she began with a simple yet striking sentence: “I was born in prison.” That opening line encapsulates a story of resilience, determination, and a refusal to be limited by circumstances.
Aurora’s mother wasn’t part of her life after giving birth to her behind bars. Instead, her father took her home and raised her as a single parent. Life wasn’t easy, but Aurora’s unwavering drive to succeed never faltered.
From an early age, she showed promise. Her love for learning and her determination caught the attention of many, including Mona Hamby, a mentor who would go on to play a pivotal role in Aurora’s life.
Mona first met Aurora through a community mentorship program when Aurora was still in elementary school. “I was given a paper about her. It said her hero was Rosa Parks, her favorite food was tacos from Dairy Queen, and she loved to read,” Mona recalled. “I thought, this girl is special. And I knew I couldn’t just meet her for lunch once a week—she needed more.”
Over the next decade, Mona became much more than a mentor. She became a guiding light, helping Aurora navigate life’s challenges. She took her for her first haircut, helped her set goals, and even accompanied her on a trip to tour Harvard’s campus in 2022.
Aurora credits the mentorship program and Mona for exposing her to a world she’d never known. “It was a very different environment than I grew up in, but that’s not a bad thing,” she shared. “Everything Mona taught me was valuable, just as everything I experienced before her was valuable.”
But Aurora’s success wasn’t just due to luck or guidance—she’s always been fiercely driven. She maintained straight As throughout high school, finding satisfaction in academic achievement. “Grades meant a lot to me,” she said, adding that she plans to study psychology at Harvard before pursuing a career in law.
Aurora’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance and support. Born into a situation most would call hopeless, she has transformed her life through grit, intelligence, and the help of those who believed in her.
