Heroic Mom Cat Faces Fire Five Times to Save Her Little Ones

A brave mom cat risked her life to save her kittens from a fire. When firefighters arrived at the garage fire in Brooklyn, they saw the heroic cat carrying her kittens, one by one, out of the burning building.

This incredible cat, named Scarlett, ran back into the flames five times. “Scarlett was seriously burned while pulling her kittens from the fire,” said firefighter David Giannelli. “Her eyes were blistered shut, her ears and paws were burned, and her fur was singed.” Most of the fur on her face had been burned away. After saving her babies, she gently touched each one with her nose to make sure they were all alive. She couldn’t see them because of the blisters on her eyes, and then she collapsed.

Brooklyn firefighters were able to put out the fire and rushed Scarlett and her kittens to get medical care. Sadly, one of the kittens didn’t survive, but the others were treated and found loving homes.

Scarlett’s incredible story inspired the North Shore Animal League to create the “Scarlett Award for Animal Heroism.” This award is given to a deserving cat at their annual Lewyt Humane Awards Luncheon.
