What started as a heartbreaking sight on the streets of Mount Laurel, New Jersey, turned into a heartwarming story of love and second chances.
It all began when Officer Matthew O’Hanlon, a three-year veteran of the Mount Laurel Police Department, was patrolling the industrial side of town. That’s when he spotted something unexpected—a tiny pit bull puppy, all alone and clearly in need of help.
At first, Officer O’Hanlon thought the pup might have just wandered off. But as he got closer, it became clear this wasn’t a case of a lost dog. The puppy had no collar, no tags, and looked injured. Someone had abandoned him.
Typically, officers can reunite lost dogs with their owners by checking for tags or a microchip. But this little guy had neither. So, Officer O’Hanlon made the call to take him to the Burlington County Animal Shelter for care.
But here’s where the story takes a heart-melting turn.
On the way to the shelter, the 3-month-old puppy worked his magic. His big, soulful eyes and undeniable cuteness tugged at the officer’s heartstrings. By the time they arrived, Officer O’Hanlon knew he was smitten. Still, he reminded himself not to get attached. He handed the puppy over to the shelter staff and walked away.
For about 20 minutes.
Unable to stop thinking about the little pup, he picked up the phone and called the shelter. “I want him,” he said.
And that’s how this abandoned puppy found his forever family.
Officer O’Hanlon and his fiancée, both huge Marvel fans, decided to name their new furry friend Thor—a nod to his strength and resilience. After some much-needed medical care, Thor healed up beautifully and settled into his new life with a loving family.
