Have you ever seen so many orcas swimming together at once? Probably not! That’s because this is the first time such a massive pod has been caught on camera.
The incredible scene unfolded off the coast of Norway, where around 300 killer whales were spotted. Yes, 300! The footage is both breathtaking and a little terrifying.
Typically, these apex predators travel in smaller groups. The massive pod was first noticed by a wildlife guide. Initially, they assumed it was just an extended family of orcas. But as the numbers kept growing, that theory was quickly tossed aside.
Orcas are known to gather in larger groups during mating season, though they’re famously secretive about their breeding habits. Even then, a gathering of this size is unheard of!
The sighting was first tipped off by a swarm of marine birds. They were circling frantically above, revealing the orcas’ location. Nearby, a fishing fleet was also at work—another clue. These waters are rich in herring, the orcas’ favorite meal. And when fishing season starts, the orcas know exactly where to go for a feast.
