Do you ever stop to pick up a stray penny on the ground? Most people shrug them off, thinking, “It’s just a penny.” But what if you didn’t? What if, for decades, you saved every single one?
That’s exactly what Otha Anders, a retired teacher from Louisiana, did. For 45 years, Anders collected every penny he came across, turning what many consider small change into something extraordinary—both spiritually and financially.
A Collection with a Deeper Purpose
Anders didn’t start saving pennies to make money. In fact, it wasn’t about the coins themselves but the meaning he found in them. Each penny became a reminder to pray and reflect. “Whenever I saw a penny, whether it was on the ground, at the gas station, or in a store, I’d stop and say a prayer,” Anders shared. “That’s why these pennies meant so much to me—they symbolized gratitude and faith.”
This wasn’t just a casual habit, either. Anders was dedicated. He never accepted coins from others, insisting on earning each one himself. Even his family had to pay if they wanted to contribute!
A Lesson in Gratitude
Over time, the pennies became more than just reminders to pray. They symbolized gratitude. On days when Anders felt less thankful, it seemed a penny would appear out of nowhere, as if nudging him to refocus on life’s blessings.
He initially set a modest goal of filling five large water jugs. But once those were full, he couldn’t stop. “I just kept going,” he said with a laugh. By the end, Anders had filled 15 enormous 5-gallon jugs with pennies—a feat that amazed everyone around him.
Time to Cash In
While Anders cherished the spiritual significance of his collection, there was a practical side to consider. He realized his home insurance wouldn’t cover the value of his pennies, and the sheer weight of the collection was a concern. It was time to deposit the coins.
He reached out to Origin Bank in Ruston, Louisiana, where he’d been a long-time customer. The bank prepared for the monumental task of counting and processing the coins. “We were happy to help Mr. Anders achieve his goal,” said Jennie Cole, the bank’s Vice President.
A Fortune in Small Change
Anders’ collection wasn’t just a testament to patience and faith; it was also worth a small fortune. Though he’d never counted the pennies himself, the final tally shocked even him.
But for Anders, the real treasure wasn’t the money—it was the journey. Each coin represented a moment of reflection, a connection to his faith, and a reminder to be grateful for life’s little blessings.
