Mary smiled at her reflection as she finished her makeup. Tonight was special—her 10th wedding anniversary. Her husband, John, was known for his incredible parties, and Mary had no doubt he’d planned something unforgettable.
Their home buzzed with guests: family, friends, and business associates. Among them was John’s sister, Lauren, a constant thorn in Mary’s side. Lauren wasn’t just nosy—she loved stirring the pot with her unwelcome opinions and smug attitude. But for John’s sake, Mary always kept her cool.
Mary slipped into her new dress, paired it with her favorite red heels, and headed downstairs. To no one’s surprise, Lauren had also shown up in red. A subtle dig, perhaps, but Mary shrugged it off. She wasn’t about to let Lauren ruin her night.
As the party rolled on, John stood to make a toast. Everyone quieted, their eyes on the couple of the hour. Smiling, he handed Mary a box wrapped in a beautiful red bow. Her heart raced as she opened it, only to freeze.
Inside was… a rag.
Mary blinked, stunned. “What’s this, John? Is this some kind of joke?”
Before John could respond, Lauren burst into laughter, loud enough to turn every head in the room. “Looks like John finally got you the perfect gift for a stay-at-home wife!” she teased, holding up her wrist to flaunt an expensive bracelet John had given her on her birthday.
John chuckled awkwardly. “It’s just a little prank Lauren suggested,” he said, leaning in to reassure Mary. “Your real gift will be here soon.”
Humiliated but determined not to cause a scene, Mary forced a smile and set the rag on the floor. Lauren, however, wasn’t done. She paraded around the party, loudly asking guests what they thought of John’s ‘gift.’
Then karma decided to make an entrance.
As Lauren sashayed away, laughing at her own joke, she stepped on the rag Mary had left behind. Her foot slipped, and she went down hard. The room fell silent before erupting into gasps and muffled laughter.
Lauren’s prized bracelet shattered, and her dress tore as she scrambled to her feet. Red-faced, she muttered an excuse and rushed out the door.
Moments later, the doorbell rang. John retrieved a small box and handed it to Mary. Inside was a stunning diamond bracelet, sparkling in the light.
Karma, it seemed, had perfect timing.
