Petty or Perfect? Mom Buys Another Shopper’s Groceries After Being Denied a Spot in Line

Grocery store drama isn’t new, but this one has the internet seriously divided.

Lani Hyde, a social media influencer with over 41,000 followers, took to TikTok to share her frustrating checkout experience—and the way she decided to get even.

According to Hyde, she was waiting in line with her toddler, who was mid-meltdown, and only had two items to buy. The woman ahead of her, however, wasn’t interested in letting her skip ahead. And that’s when things took a turn.

@thehydefive My husbands still like you didnt but im all for it 😂 she coulda let me go first and stop the whinging in her ear lol!! #shopping #lol #dailyvlog #dayinmylife #haha #karma ♬ original sound – Lani-thehydefive 🌴

A Grocery Line Showdown

Hyde described the situation, saying she locked eyes with a “put-together” woman who seemed visibly annoyed by her son’s tantrum. “She was eyeballing me and greasing me off because obviously, Hudson’s squeal was p***ing her off, [just] like it was p****ing me off,” Hyde said.

Still, the woman didn’t budge. Despite seeing Hyde struggling with her flailing toddler and only two items, she continued placing her groceries on the belt, ignoring Hyde’s silent plea.

So when it was finally the woman’s turn to check out, Hyde took matters into her own hands—literally.

Her “Petty” Revenge Move

Instead of waiting quietly, Hyde reached over, grabbed the woman’s eggs, bacon, and butter from the back of the pile, and pulled them toward herself. Then, she placed her own two items in front and bought them instead.

“I just sat [her groceries] back towards me, put mine in front of it, and I bought them,” she explained.

While Hyde felt justified in her actions, her husband strongly disagreed, calling her out for taking things too far. But when she asked TikTok if she was in the wrong, the internet had plenty to say.

The Internet Weighs In

Many slammed Hyde’s behavior, saying she had no right to expect special treatment.

One commenter wrote: “What makes you think you deserve to go ahead just because you have a child acting up? The world doesn’t revolve around you.”

Another agreed: “You’re in the wrong. No one owes you anything. Having a misbehaving child doesn’t mean you’re entitled to cut the line.”

But not everyone saw it that way.

Some applauded her move, with one person commenting: “100% love this. It’s not hard to be nice. Nice people get eggs and bacon!”

Another added: “It’s an unwritten courtesy rule to let someone in front if they have barely anything and you have heaps. You took it next level, and I love it!”

Where Do You Stand?

Was Hyde justified in her frustration, or was her revenge over the top? Grocery store etiquette can be a tricky thing, but one thing’s for sure—this debate isn’t cooling down anytime soon.
