Sometimes, life is about being in the right place at the right time—and knowing exactly what to do when it counts. Six-year-old Dorian Beshara proved that heroes come in all sizes when he spotted something troubling in his neighbor’s yard.
It was an ordinary afternoon at his grandmother’s house in Salem, New Hampshire. Dorian, full of curiosity, peered out the big windows, expecting to catch a glimpse of Dorothy Beal, his grandma’s 84-year-old neighbor and his longtime friend. Dorothy was like family—always greeting him with candy or a warm hug. But this time, something felt off.
Dorian noticed Dorothy by her birdbath, but she wasn’t her usual cheerful self. She looked hurt, and she was signaling to him for help. Something inside Dorian told him to act fast.
“I saw Dot Beal in the yard and knew something was wrong,” Dorian later shared with WCVB 5. “I called my dad and uncle right away and told them to go help her.”
Dorian’s quick call brought his dad and uncle rushing to Dorothy’s aid. They immediately dialed 911 for an ambulance. As it turned out, Dorothy had suffered a serious injury—she’d bent over and accidentally broken her back. She was in agony and desperately needed help.
“I bent over and heard my back crack,” Dorothy recalled. “It hurt so bad, so I motioned for Dorian to come.”
For Dorothy, Dorian was her only hope. Without hesitation, this young boy became the hero she needed.
Dorothy wasn’t the only one grateful for Dorian’s actions. His parents and the firefighters who responded to the emergency couldn’t stop praising him. His father shared a touching reminder: “Little kids can do so much more than they get credit for. I’m the proudest father ever.”
Since that day, Dorothy and Dorian’s bond has grown even stronger. The little boy who once came by for hugs and candy now stops by to check on her regularly.
“We’re buddies,” Dorothy said with a smile. “He watches out for me, knocks on my door, and visits before heading off on his way.”
Dorothy knows she’s safe with Dorian by her side. His courage, quick thinking, and kindness turned an ordinary afternoon into a life-saving rescue.
