“Where do you need me?” Those were the last words of Captain Roy Sewell Jr., a 27-year-old firefighter from Tennessee, before his life was tragically cut short.
Captain Sewell, a dedicated member of the North Tazewell Volunteer Fire Department, was responding to an emergency call on April 24, 2023. He had been tasked with setting up a landing zone for a medical helicopter following an ATV crash involving a child. Sadly, while driving a Spartan Fire Truck to the scene, the vehicle veered off the road and overturned, taking his life.
The Tazewell Police Department shared the heartbreaking news in a statement:
“The Tazewell Police Department, along with our other emergency services and community, mourns the untimely loss of Captain Roy Sewell Jr. Thank you, Captain Sewell, for your service. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and colleagues.”
The North Tazewell Volunteer Fire Department echoed this sentiment in their own tribute:
“With heavy hearts, we mourn the loss of our fallen brother. Roy represented the best of us all. Greater love hath no man than this.”
Captain Sewell’s final radio call, “Where do you need me?” was a testament to his unwavering dedication. Fire Department Chief LaRoy Brandt described him as someone who always put others first. “He believed in serving his fellow man. All you had to do was ask, and he’d be there,” Brandt shared.
For nearly a decade, Sewell served his community with courage and compassion. Beyond his role as a firefighter, he was a devoted family man. He leaves behind his wife, Randi, their young daughter, and an unborn son. Tragically, he was also a father to a child who passed before him.
According to his obituary, Sewell was known for his kind heart and infectious spirit. “Roy never met a stranger he couldn’t call ‘friend.’ He loved spending time with his family and brought joy to everyone he met,” it read.
Captain Sewell’s passing has left an indelible mark on his community, colleagues, and loved ones. His final words embody the spirit of selflessness that defined his life.
