The Heartbreaking Words Diana Spoke Moments Before Her Passing

Known as the “People’s Princess,” Diana was admired worldwide for her kindness, empathy, and love for the ordinary. Her legacy reshaped the British Monarchy and forever changed how the world viewed royalty.

On August 31, 1997, the world stood still. A car crash in Paris’s Pont de l’Alma tunnel claimed the lives of Princess Diana, her partner Dodi Fayed, and their driver, Henri Paul. The sole survivor, bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones, carried the physical and emotional scars of that fateful night.

At the time, Diana’s sons, William and Harry, were just 15 and 12 years old—a heartbreaking detail that deepened the grief of millions.

Xavier Gourmelon, one of the first firefighters to reach the wreckage, later shared his haunting memories of that night. Speaking to The Independent, he described the scene as chaotic but initially believed Diana would survive.

“The car was in a mess, and we just dealt with it like any road accident,” Gourmelon recalled. “For me, it was just another traffic accident—speed and a drunk driver.”

Diana, conscious and alert when he reached her, seemed relatively unharmed. “She had a slight injury to her right shoulder but no visible blood. I held her hand, told her to stay calm, and reassured her,” he said.

Then, Diana uttered her last words: “My God, what’s happened?”

Gourmelon, like many, was shocked to learn later that Diana had succumbed to massive internal injuries. Her death was attributed to a ruptured blood vessel and severe internal bleeding.

Her funeral, watched by an estimated 2.3 billion people globally, marked a day of collective mourning. Diana’s loss left a wound in the hearts of billions.

For Mohamed Al-Fayed, the father of Dodi, the tragedy was more than an accident. He has maintained his belief that there was more to the story—a claim that continues to stir debate.
