Think These Pets Are Cute? A Vet Explains the Truth

When we look at cats and dogs, the first thing that grabs our attention is their cuteness. With so many breeds out there, some are even considered cuter than others. But are they really as adorable as they seem?

On her TikTok channel, Cat the Vet, a UK-based veterinary surgeon, shared an eye-opening message: “This is not cute. This is cruel.” She showed a picture of the popular Persian flat-faced cat, which has thousands of Instagram followers. This cat looks adorable, but Cat the Vet explains why it’s actually cruel. In a series of videos, Cat the Vet reveals the truth about many cute pet breeds that suffer from serious health problems. From Scottish Fold cats and flat-faced dogs to Munchkin cats and Persian cats, her videos offer a new perspective on what “cute” really means.

1. Scottish Fold Cats

They look adorable, but have you ever wondered why their ears are folded? It’s due to weak cartilage, which causes their ears—and sometimes their joints—to collapse. This weakness leads to painful arthritis, a condition that makes movement difficult and often leads to early euthanasia. All of this for the sake of “cute” ears. It’s important to understand that these cats suffer in silence.

When you see celebrities with Scottish Folds in ads, it’s a good idea to remember this cruelty behind their cuteness.

2. Flat-faced Dog Breeds

These dogs are charming, but they face serious health issues. Many flat-faced breeds struggle to breathe because their nostrils are tiny slits. On the outside, they appear cute, but inside, their airways are compromised. At rest, these dogs often need to prop their faces up to keep breathing, and without that support, they can suffocate while sleeping.

Their health problems don’t stop there. These dogs also suffer from painful skin conditions, dental decay, and spinal issues, making walking difficult. Their bulging eyes are prone to painful infections too.

3. Munchkin Cats

Munchkin cats have short legs due to a genetic mutation. While cats are naturally active, Munchkins can’t move as freely. Their legs and joints are deformed, and X-rays show that their limbs are twisted and painful. These cats are physically restricted and suffer from chronic joint pain, making their lives much harder than they should be.

4. Toad Bulldogs or Exotic Bully

Bulldogs, especially the Toad Bulldogs, face severe health problems. These dogs often suffer from hip and elbow dysplasia, along with arthritis. Many struggle just to walk and live in constant pain. In some countries, breeding these dogs is illegal because it’s considered torture breeding.

5. Flat-faced Cat Breeds

Flat-faced cats face similar struggles to their dog counterparts. Their tiny nostrils make breathing difficult. Their skulls are misshapen, and this can lead to serious brain issues or even be fatal. On top of that, their tear ducts don’t drain properly, causing painful, sticky eye infections.

Their prominent eyes are also at risk for injury, making life even harder for these seemingly cute cats.

6. Pekingese Dogs

The Pekingese dog is another breed suffering because of its looks. Their flat skull causes problems with breathing, vision, and painful skin folds. When compared to other dogs, their mobility is severely limited, making it difficult for them to move around.

Pekingese dogs are also at risk of overheating due to their thick coats and flat faces. It’s clear that their health problems go far beyond their cute appearance.

As you can see, many pets that we consider “cute” actually suffer from serious health conditions. It’s crucial to understand the hidden struggles behind these breeds, so we can make more informed choices when it comes to pet ownership.
