What Happened to ‘Tan Mom’? Patricia Krentcil’s Surprising New Look

Patricia Krentcil made headlines for her infamous tanning obsession—but her story is far more complex than the tabloids ever told. Known as “Tan Mom,” Patricia gained notoriety for her extreme tanning habits, which she admits nearly cost her life. At one point, she hit tanning salons five days a week, chasing the bronzed look that would ultimately bring her fame and controversy.

Her tanning journey began innocently enough in her youth. But by 2012, Patricia found herself thrust into the national spotlight for an entirely different reason: allegations that she took her six-year-old daughter to a tanning booth, leaving the child with burns.

Patricia denied the claims vehemently, insisting her daughter’s sunburn came from outdoor play, not salon sessions. “There’s no way. I would never permit it. It didn’t happen,” she stated, adding that her red-haired daughter had simply gotten too much sun while splashing in a kiddie pool.

The accusations didn’t stick, but the damage was done. The media dubbed her “Tan Mom,” and her heavily bronzed appearance became the face of tabloid scandal. “This whole thing’s preposterous!” Patricia said at the time.

Experts Weigh In

The uproar ignited debates about tanning addiction. Dermatologists chimed in, calling Patricia’s extreme habits a potential case of “tanorexia”—a condition where people can’t recognize the dangers of over-tanning. “Visiting tanning salons 20 times a month is alarming,” said dermatologist Dr. Zeichner. He emphasized the long-term risks, including skin cancer.

For Patricia, the backlash didn’t end with the court ruling. Although she was acquitted in 2013, the media frenzy left lasting scars. Under public scrutiny and mounting stress, Patricia turned to alcohol, and her family relocated to Florida in search of a fresh start.

Turning Fame into Opportunity

Despite the chaos, Patricia saw her new notoriety as a chance to build something positive. With five kids and a husband out of work, she decided to write a book, explore modeling, and even star in a movie about her life. “It’s not over yet,” she said with determination. “I’m figuring out how to support my family.”

But her challenges weren’t over. In 2019, Patricia suffered cardiac arrest, along with severe pneumonia and other complications. She fought hard to recover, with her close friend Adam Barta calling it a turning point in her life.

A New Chapter

Today, Patricia is thriving. Although she still uses a tanning bed twice a day, she embraces the scars from her tanning days and separates herself from the media persona of “Tan Mom.”

“It doesn’t bother me anymore,” she told The Post. “There are two people: Tan Mom, the celebrity, and Patricia Marie, the mom.”

Her story is one of resilience—proof that even in the face of scandal and health crises, a fresh start is always possible.
