Can you imagine spending 500 days completely alone, 230 feet underground, with no sunlight or human contact? For most of us, that sounds like a nightmare. But for Beatriz Flamini, a 50-year-old Spanish athlete, it was the ultimate adventure.
Flamini emerged from her subterranean home last Friday (April 14), cracking a joke as she greeted the world. “When they came to get me, I was asleep,” she told reporters. “I thought, ‘Already? Surely not.’ I hadn’t even finished my book!”
Her journey wasn’t just for thrills. Flamini participated in a groundbreaking scientific experiment to help researchers understand how the human brain and body cope with extreme isolation. For 500 days, she lived in a cave outside Granada, Spain, monitored by a team of psychologists, trainers, and cave specialists. No one was allowed to contact her directly.
Flamini’s time underground was filled with challenges and surprises. She not only broke the world record for the longest time spent in a cave but also missed some major world events – including the outbreak of the Ukraine war and the death of Queen Elizabeth II. She entered the cave at 48 years old and celebrated two birthdays alone in the dark.
Equipped with two GoPros, Flamini documented her experience, offering insights into the passage of time in complete isolation. “It’s not that time moves faster or slower,” she explained. “It simply doesn’t pass because it’s always four in the morning. It’s been amazing, girl. Really amazing.”
So, how did she spend her time? Flamini stayed busy with exercise, knitting, art, and journaling. But after 65 days, she stopped counting and let go of tracking time altogether.
Of course, there were tough moments, but Flamini stayed resilient. “If this is your dream, and you’re living it, why cry?” she said. She admitted to internal conversations but avoided speaking aloud to herself. “You have to stay aware of your emotions. Fear is natural, but panic? That’s paralyzing.”
Her team ensured she had fresh food like avocados and eggs, along with clean clothes. Still, Flamini was completely alone for nearly a year and a half, relying on her mental strength to navigate the isolation.
Now back above ground, Flamini will undergo medical exams to assess the physical and psychological effects of her extraordinary adventure. As for her next challenge? Knowing her, it’s only a matter of time before she embarks on another daring feat.
