What’s the best joke between owls? “Owl always love you!” And in this story, that sentiment feels spot-on. Prepare to be charmed by two adorable barn owls caught on camera sharing what looks like a tender kiss and a cozy snuggle in the fork of a tree.
But here’s the twist: they aren’t lovebirds—they’re sisters!
Wildlife photographer Leslie Arnott, 55, from Staffordshire, captured this enchanting moment during a Country Events and Falconry session. These events teach participants the art of photographing static and flying birds of prey. Leslie, with his sharp eye and camera in hand, managed to immortalize this rare moment of sibling affection in Leas Marston’s dark woodlands.
“The owls are trained, but they fly freely in the woodland for people to photograph them,” Leslie explained. Watching the two sisters land on a branch and share a quiet, intimate moment was a first for him. “They started rubbing heads, getting quite affectionate, and then came the moment they appeared to kiss. It was probably not intentional, but it’s something I’ve never witnessed before—or since.”
The setting made the moment even more magical. “It was challenging to photograph in the dim woodland,” Leslie admitted, “but the pair flew for a bit before settling down to share their special connection. Even though they’re trained birds, seeing this behavior felt so authentic and unique.”
The sisterly bond didn’t end there. For about three minutes, the owls continued their display of affection, rubbing heads and snuggling close. Leslie was fortunate to capture not one but two moments that looked like kisses. “It was as much about luck as skill to catch that split-second moment,” he said, “and I’m so glad I did.”
Whether it was a kiss or simply a sweet nuzzle, one thing is clear—these owls share a remarkable bond that touched everyone who saw them.
