Here’s a heartwarming tale of an unusual friendship that’s winning hearts at Pairi Daiza Zoo. Meet the orangutans and otters who just can’t be separated!
Animal friendships across species are always adorable. But this bond between a family of orangutans and a few playful otters has truly charmed the internet.
It all began when the zoo staff placed otters in a river running through the orangutan habitat. Soon after, zookeepers noticed the orangutans and otters hanging out together. Since then, a beautiful bond has blossomed between them.
These two species even play hide-and-seek together! In photos, you can see the joy they bring each other.
One zookeeper, Mathieu, shared that the otters hide under tree trunks or buildings. Then Berani, the baby orangutan, sets off to find them. “Sometimes they pop out to tease him,” Mathieu says. “It’s incredible to watch.”
Pairi Daiza has invested in creating enriching environments for its animals. Mathieu explains, “Quality of life here means more than just space. We want them to be active and engaged.” Along with hiding food and setting up puzzles, one strategy is to mix species that enjoy each other’s company.
He adds, “Our gorillas live with colobus monkeys, penguins with seals, kangaroos with pelicans, and so on. It’s a joy to see these friendships unfold.”
