A tattoo artist is under fire after sharing a back tattoo that cost nearly $1,000—and it’s safe to say, opinions are split.
Tattoos are a deeply personal form of art. What’s breathtaking to one person might look like a preschool doodle to someone else. They come in endless styles, from hyper-realism to whimsical watercolor, each bringing its own flair. But one thing’s for sure—they don’t come cheap.
That brings us to a 21-year-old Berlin-based tattoo artist, Mykhailo, whose latest work has taken TikTok by storm—though maybe not for the reasons he hoped. The design, which cost €900 ($976), covers an entire back and has racked up over two million views.

In the TikTok video, Mykhailo showcases a stencil featuring what looks like two palm trees sprouting from a chaotic swirl, with additional random lines scattered across the back. While the design is open to interpretation, viewers had no trouble interpreting their disdain.
One commenter wrote, “My kids can scribble better than this. This person is scribbling on flesh, and y’all are all in? I don’t get it.” Another added, “I wouldn’t get this tattoo if someone paid me €900 and threw in the tattoo for free.”
Some speculated the design might have sentimental value, perhaps inspired by a child’s drawing. However, Mykhailo later clarified the controversy in an interview with Insider.
The artist admitted he exaggerated the price in his TikTok video, saying it was closer to €700-800 ($750-850). He explained that the design symbolizes “freedom” and “beauty” and is tailored to complement both the client’s body and personality.
Despite anticipating backlash, Mykhailo defended his work, expressing frustration over the negativity. “Why do random people on the internet have so much time to comment negative messages?” he asked.
While Mykhailo acknowledged that some might be “triggered” by unconventional art styles, he stands by his vision. Love it or hate it, the tattoo has certainly sparked conversation—and isn’t that what art is all about?
What do you think? Is this design a bold statement of freedom or just a $1,000 regret? Share your thoughts!
